Hi guys, the plan for this week:

Class one:

  • We will start by discussing environmental damage and our impact on the environment, and what we can do to reduce this negative impact.
  • We will then focus on the throw-away culture that we live in.
  • Students will discuss the concepts of repairing vs throwing away items and discuss a few specific examples.
  • We will then look at some key vocabulary that they will need to understand in order to complete the next task, a gap-fill exercise.
  • After completing this we will discuss the content and watch a video about Swedish tax-breaks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRUa1x1N2z8
  • We will finish by practising part 4 of the speaking exam, based on the topic of the throwaway culture.

Homework:

Your class has watched a television debate about what should be done to ensure that broken products are not needlessly thrown away. You have made the notes below:

Ways to ensure damaged products are not needlessly thrown away

  • Financial incentives for consumers
  • Improvements in industry
  • Social media

some opinions expressed in the discussion:

“Consumers should be rewarded if they choose to repair a broken product instead of buying a new one.”

“The best method would be the create more durable products that don’t break so easily.”

“Social networking sites can educate people about the disadvantages of needlessly throwing products away.”

Write an essay discussing TWO of the ways in your notes. You should explain which way you think is the most effective, giving reasons in support of your answer.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.
