Hi guys,

Are you excited for our first online class? I certainly am! Here’s what we are going to do this week.

Class One:

We are going to start the class with a discussion on what everyone has been up to over the last week and we will share some tips on how to avoid boredom during the quarantine.

We will practice Part 3 of the speaking exam with a twist:

Why are these things important to do when in quarantine?

  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Exercise
  • Arts and crafts
  • Subscribe to online streaming services (Netflix/HBO etc)
  • Adopt a dog

You will have to decide which of these is the most important using phrases from here.

For homework please watch this video on the phenomenon of JOMO (joy of missing out) and answer the following questions:

a) What are 2 factors that make us feel FOMO?

b) What should we do to experience JOMO?

c) What does ‘moderate life’ mean according to Aristotle?

d) What does it mean to be human according to the speaker?

e) How does the example of Nero show that limitless life is life of despair?

Class Two:

We will check our answers from the homework and discuss the following statements:

We will then talk about the idea of a bucket list, i.e. a list of things you want to do before you die. Any idea what you would put on yours?

The Daily Mail newspaper conducted a survey to see what the British public most commonly put on their bucket lists. You will have to try and guess the top 10 choices!

We will then discuss which experiences you would include in your own bucket list using the phrases below:

For homework you will have to prepare a mini-presentation on a topic of your choice. You can find key vocabulary and the list of topics here, but we will go over it in class.
