Today we will continue learning about the passive voice. Today we will move onto the Causative.
First off we will work in pairs to discuss the following questions:
- If you have a car, when did you last have it repaired?
- If you don’t have a car, how often do you have your hair cut?
- How often do you get food delivered to your home? When was the last time and what type of food was it?
- Do you prefer to plan your own holidays or get a travel agent to plan it for you? What are the advantages of both?
- If you were a millionaire, what would you have someone do for you? (Reply e.g: I would have a builder renovate my house.)
- To improve your home, what do you want/need done? (Reply e.g: I want/need my ceiling fixed.)
- Has your phone/valuable object ever got stolen? What happened?
We will then cover the grammar behind the causative:
- Have/get/want/need something + past participle
- Something gets + past participle (for negatives situations)
- Have someone (+infinitive) something
- Get someone (+ to + infinitive) something

Messi is thought to be the best player ever.
Scientists know that pollen allergy affects a lot of people.
Pollen allergies are known to affect a lot of people.
Journalists expect that the president will give a speech at 2pm.
The president is expected to give a speech at 2pm.
- What country is considered to have the best cuisine in the world?
- How many portions of fruit and veg are said to be the minimum recommended amount per day?
- When is Valencia CF expected to appoint their next manager?
Beliefs and opinions about the Past
… to be + past participle + a perfect infinitive
Experts think that Van Gogh painted the painting in 1888.
Van Gogh is thought to have painted the painting in 1888.
The police think he killed his wife.
He is thought to have killed his wife.
- When is the big bang thought to have happened?
- Why are Shakira and Pique believed to have broken up?

Wednesday/Thursday
Today we will move onto a new topic, which is all about intelligence. We will:
- Start off with a short “intelligence quiz” Bamboozle and discuss what intelligence is, and the different types of thinkers.
We will then look at some questionable forms of intelligent life and learn about brainless learning, plus how to guess the meaning of words from context on page 95
To finish the class we will learn some adverb and adjective collocations using this Quizlet Live (vocabulary also on page 92/93)
