Part 1

Today we will start with a video about how social media began: Social media: How it all began – BBC What’s New? Then we will compare our perception of it to that of older generations.

First off we will revise negative prefixes and what they mean, by completing exercises 1-3 on page 18. We will then focus on identifying word forms in exercise 1 on page 21. We will look at the example exam practice on page 21 together and cover exam technique.

Part 2

In part 2 of the class we will start off with a roleplay to practise conflict resolution. This will lead into a revision of when to use the gerund vs infinitive. We’ll listen to some examples of their use, and work through the rules of how to use them. We will also look at reading and use of English part 4 (Key word sentence transformation).

We will then work in pairs to answer the following conversation questions:

  • Tell your partner a story of when you objected to doing something. What was it and why did you refuse to do it?
  • When you have an argument with a friend, do you have a tendency to resolve the situation quickly or does it take a long time to get sorted out? Share with your partner an example of a silly fight you had with a friend.
  • Some people have difficulty in accepting they are wrong or saying sorry. Why do you think this is?
  • Teenagers should be made to complete community service during part of their summer holidays to make sure they use their time productively. To what extent do you agree?
  • Governments should make every effort to censor the media in order to stop misinformation and fake news. How far do you agree with this?
  • Think of a time you couldn’t help laughing in an awkward or inappropriate situation. What happened, why was it so funny?

We will finish the class with typical questions from speaking part 1, and a Kahoot to learn some Proficiency-level phrases: Relationship idioms Kahoot
