Today we will start a new unit in the book: Media Matters
We will discuss the questions on page 84, and these questions:
- In what ways have the methods of reporting new changed over the last 75 years?
- Some people like to know everything that is happening in the news, while others mostly ignore the news. How much interest do you take in what is happening in the news?
- How do you consume the news? (e.g. TV, newspaper, social media etc)
… in pairs, and then watch a short video about journalism and its future.

This leads us into the listening task on page 85.
We will then look at word formation rules on page 86 and 87.
Finally we will complete the speaking part 3 task on page 88 and discuss the following questions:
On a scale of 1-5 (5= strongly agree) how do you feel about the following statements, and why?
- The news influences people and politics too much.
- News channels should provide facts, never opinion.
- Nowadays the media (TV, newspaper, Internet) are less concerned about the accuracy of news than in the past.
- Governments should be allowed to censor some elements of the media.
- We can’t trust major media outlets, citizens should report the news.
